The short answer: Chicago's most reliable free public restrooms are at the Cultural Center, Harold Washington Library, Millennium Park, Navy Pier, the major train stations (Union, Ogilvie), and the lakefront beach pavilions in summer. The CTA almost never has public restrooms — plan accordingly.
Chicago is more walkable than people give it credit for, but it's also a winter city — half the lakefront restrooms close from October to April. Here's where to actually go, season by season.
The Loop & Downtown
Chicago Cultural Center
78 E Washington Street. Free admission, free public restrooms on multiple floors. Open daily (typically 10am–5pm). One of the cleanest no-purchase options in the Loop. Bonus: Tiffany dome on the third floor.
Harold Washington Library Center
400 S State Street. Free public restrooms on multiple floors during library hours. The 9th floor (Winter Garden) restroom is the quietest.
Millennium Park & Maggie Daley Park
Restrooms at the Pritzker Pavilion (north side, near the Bean), and at Maggie Daley Park's Skating Ribbon area. Open during park hours (6am–11pm). Heavy traffic during festivals.
Macy's on State Street
The historic Marshall Field's building has clean department-store restrooms across multiple floors. Open store hours.
Block 37
108 N State Street. The downtown shopping center has public restrooms inside.
Hotel lobbies
The Palmer House Hilton, the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel (across from Millennium Park), the Hard Rock Hotel, the Hyatt Regency Chicago. All allow lobby restroom use without questions.
The Lakefront
Navy Pier
Multiple free restrooms throughout the pier. Newer family-pavilion ones are best.
North Avenue Beach Pavilion
The boathouse-style pavilion has restrooms, a snack bar, and showers. Open Memorial Day to Labor Day (longer hours in peak summer).
Oak Street Beach
Restrooms at the beachfront. Summer-only.
Montrose Beach
Restrooms at the bait shop area and at the dog beach. Summer hours.
31st Street and 63rd Street Beaches
Restrooms at each beachhouse. Summer hours.
Lakefront Trail (winter use)
Most lakefront restrooms close in winter. Year-round options on the lakefront: the Shedd Aquarium plaza area, Soldier Field (event days only), and McCormick Place.
Parks & Museum Campus
Grant Park
Restrooms at multiple field-house locations and at the Buckingham Fountain area (summer only). Maggie Daley Park (north end) is the most reliable year-round.
Museum Campus
The Field Museum, the Adler Planetarium, and Shedd Aquarium all have restrooms inside (admission required). The plaza area between them sometimes has a portable restroom setup during summer events.
Lincoln Park
Restrooms at the Lincoln Park Zoo (free admission, free restrooms), at the Conservatory (free admission), and at North Pond. The zoo is the most reliable.
Transit Hubs
Union Station
Restrooms in the Great Hall and on the lower concourse near Amtrak gates. Open during station hours (roughly 5am–1am). Clean.
Ogilvie Transportation Center
Restrooms in the Metra waiting area and in the food hall. Clean.
Millennium Station
Underground Metra station beneath Millennium Park. Restrooms available during station hours.
O'Hare & Midway
See our family restrooms at major US airports guide for terminal-by-terminal details. Both have family restrooms with changing stations in every concourse.
By Neighborhood
River North / Magnificent Mile
900 North Michigan shops, Water Tower Place (lower level food court), and the John Hancock Center observation level. Hotel lobbies on Michigan Avenue (the Drake, the Peninsula, the Park Hyatt) are reliable.
West Loop / Fulton Market
Time Out Market (food hall) has free public restrooms. Most restaurants in the Fulton Market area gate them for customers.
Wicker Park / Bucktown
Coffee shops and bookstores are your friends — Myopic Books, Big Star, any of the cafes on Milwaukee Avenue.
Hyde Park
The University of Chicago campus has restrooms in Mansueto Library, the Smart Museum (free admission), and the Reynolds Club. The Museum of Science and Industry has restrooms (admission required).
Pilsen
The National Museum of Mexican Art (free admission) has clean restrooms.
Winter Survival
From November through April, the lakefront becomes restroom-poor. Default to indoor options: malls, museums (free-admission ones especially), department stores, the Cultural Center, the library, Union Station, hotel lobbies, and any Starbucks. Don't count on a beach pavilion — most are locked tight from October to Memorial Day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are there free public restrooms in downtown Chicago?
Yes. Free public restrooms in the Chicago Loop are available at Millennium Park (Pritzker Pavilion area), the Chicago Cultural Center, the Harold Washington Library Center, Union Station, Ogilvie Transportation Center, Macy's on State Street, and inside Block 37. Cultural Center and Harold Washington Library are the cleanest no-purchase options.
Does Navy Pier have public restrooms?
Yes — multiple restrooms throughout Navy Pier, all free. The newer ones near the family pavilion and the south arcade are cleanest. Open during pier hours (typically 10am–10pm in summer, shorter winter hours).
Where can I find a clean restroom on the Chicago lakefront?
The lakefront has free public restrooms at Oak Street Beach, North Avenue Beach (the boathouse-style pavilion), Montrose Beach, 31st Street Beach, and 63rd Street Beach. North Avenue Beach Pavilion is the nicest. Most are open Memorial Day through Labor Day; off-season options shrink dramatically.
Are the restrooms at O'Hare and Midway clean?
O'Hare's renovated terminals (especially T5 international) are clean and have family restrooms with changing stations in every concourse. Midway is smaller and the restrooms are generally well-maintained. See our family restrooms at major US airports guide for terminal-by-terminal details.
Do CTA stations have public restrooms?
Almost none. The CTA does not provide public restrooms at most stations. Exceptions: O'Hare and Midway stations (which connect to the airports), and a few terminal stations. Plan to use a restroom before or after your ride, not during.
